How you live affects how you feel. Just like Chinese Feng shui, the traditional ancient Indian medicine system Ayurveda – the ‘science of life’ – has its own practices for cultivating positive energy in your home. We delve into Vastu, the Hindu system of curating your living space to help you thrive.
Welcome positivity into your home
Vastu believes that a beautiful entrance attracts prosperity. The main entryway is considered the “archway to victory and progress in life”, and should face north, east, or north-east. Now, we know you’re not about to rip out a south facing door for #positivevibes, so if your entryway isn’t located in a Vastu-approved direction, try placing some plants with rounded leaves (like succulents) on the north side of your living room to attract abundance and prosperity. Ensure your entryway is well lit, and avoid keeping any shoe racks or footwear near the door as it is thought to block positive energy from entering your home.
Don’t let negativity chime in
The gentle tinkling sound that emanates from wind chimes is thought to shatter negative energy and suppress bad luck. The type of wind chimes you should select depends on where your front door faces and the type of positive energy you’re trying to attract. Metal wind chimes are best hung in the north (to open up career opportunities), west (bring good luck to your children) or north-west (luck with mentors) zones, and wooden wind chimes are suitable for the south (attracts fame), east (positive growth for household members), and south-east (attracts wealth) areas.
Sleep tight
Your bedroom should be a place of rest and rejuvenation; avoid brightly coloured walls and opt for soothing tones instead. Try to keep furniture to a minimum, and avoid having your bed pushed up against the wall or placed in the corner. Allow fresh air to flow into your bedroom by opening the windows for half an hour a day, and let natural light into your room during the day.
Embrace art
According to Vastu, certain types of paintings attract good luck and prosperity. Scenic paintings like flowing water or river landscapes attract wealth and abundance into your life, and the larger the painting, the more positive energy it will attract. Keep these paintings in the living room or hallway, as having paintings depicting water in the bedroom is thought to cause emotional outbursts.
