Feeling bloated? You’re not alone. The phrase “I feel so bloated” has become mainstream among friends, family, and co-workers. There are two main types of bloating; gas bloating and water retention bloating.
Gas bloating makes you feel full and uncomfortable, and generally occurs after eating certain foods like dairy, legumes, and veggies like cauliflower or broccoli. This varies from person to person, some foods trigger bloating in some people but not in others. On the other hand, water retention bloating is more of a puffy feeling and can be triggered by dehydration, salty food consumption, lack of potassium or water (ironic, we know) intake, or hormonal changes during your period.
To help your digestive system out and avoid the dreaded bloat, here are the best foods to reduce bloating.
Ginger
One of the oldest herbal remedies around, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic ginger helps relax the gut muscles and alleviate bloating by letting food pass through your digestive system more easily. Ginger also contains the digestive enzyme zingibain which helps the body break down protein. Try adding ginger to your warm lemon water or drinking it as a tea before meals.
Asparagus
Asparagus is the queen of anti-bloating foods. This green veggie contains prebiotics which support the growth of good bacteria in the gut, and is a natural diuretic which helps reduce water retention. Try grilling asparagus with garlic and squeeze some lemon on top for a satisfying anti-bloat side dish.
Fennel seeds
Fennel seeds are an underrated digestive angel. Fennel is antispasmodic, helping to reduce GI spasms which allows gas to pass and relieves that bloated feeling. Try sipping fennel tea or simply chew some fennel seeds after a meal.
Pineapples
A pina colada’s best friend, pineapple contains the digestive enzyme bromelain which helps break down protein. Try sliced pineapple as a snack or make a pina colada inspired tropical smoothie (sans alcohol) with pineapple, coconut milk, and mango for breakfast.
Lemon
Lemon juice has a similar acidity level to the stomach’s digestive juices and can reduce bloating by stimulating the digestive processes. Try starting the day by drinking a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon.
