7 wellness rules to learn from the French

French women always seem to have it together; they eat bread and drink wine on the regular and still maintain amazing figures, look chic in the simplest of outfits, and have that certain je ne sais quoi

Though we can’t drop everything and head to Paris or Provence just yet, we can still emulate aspects of the French lifestyle. Here are our seven favourite French wellness tips!

Drink your coffee black

Though a lot of health advice centres of cutting out coffee altogether, the French regularly enjoy a morning cuppa. However, they do so without milk or sugar – coffee is typically consumed in the morning as an espresso. Good quality coffee tastes good without any additives, so you can have your coffee and drink it too!

Walk everywhere

The French don’t call ubers or jump on buses to get from point A to point B, preferring to walk or ride a bike to their destinations. Walking is a daily occurrence for the French and is naturally ingrained into their lifestyles; you’re more likely to find French women walking during lunch than hitting a spin class or the gym.

While walking everywhere may be difficult (particularly if you live far away from work/uni), incorporate more walking into your lifestyle by ditching the uber for short distances, walking while doing your errands around the city, or riding a bike to and from work.

Stay hydrated

Hydration is key for that effortless glow! Aim for at least 2L of water a day and spitz your face with a hydrating thermal mist for a boost of freshness during the day.

Skincare over makeup

The French prioritise skincare over makeup, choosing to nourish the skin they have rather than looking for ways to cover it up. French skincare looks at prevention, treatment, and maintenance – invest in a good SPF (especially important with the harsh Australian sun!), cleanse your face at night, use a serum which targets your specific skincare needs, and end with a hydrating moisturiser.

Don’t deprive yourself

The French don’t restrict themselves – they enjoy bread and wine, and look amazing doing it! Take the time to savour your food; instead of eating on the go, sit down and enjoy the sensory experience of eating. Better still, make it a social experience and enjoy a meal with friends. Taking the time to enjoy your food prevents you from overeating, allowing you to enjoy the foods you love.

End your showers with cold water

We love hot showers here, especially in winter. However, many French women opt for cold showers over steaming ones, which enhances circulation, leading to firmer, more toned skin. If you can’t give up the heat altogether, aim for lukewarm showers to avoid drying out your skin, and end with a jolt of cold water.

Say oui to self care

Feeling good is just as important as looking good. Face masks, long baths, scented candles, and massages aren’t considered luxuries; they’re necessities. Regardless of how busy your schedule is, ensure you take the time to look after yourself.
