The brutal murder of George Floyd in Minnesota was something we can’t look away from, and something we needed to be confronted with; but as American political activist Angela Davis says, “In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist. We must be anti-racist.”
These movies and TV shows are just some of the ones out there to help educate you and give you a stronger voice on racial injustice – including on our own soil; 434 Aboriginals have died in custody in Australia since 1991.

A biographical film that tells yet another tragic African American story: In 2009 on New Year’s Day, 22-year old Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan), working to get his life back together, was shot for no reason by the BART police at Fruitvale Station in Oakland. Watch it on iTunes.
Imprisoned at New York’s notorious Rikers Island jail for three years (two of which were in solitary confinement) for allegedly stealing a backpack, Kalief Browder’s story is a tragedy. Highlighting everything that’s wrong with the system, watch this six-part documentary on Netflix.
Based on outrageously true events in the 70s, this American crime film featuring John David Washington and Adam Driver tells the story of Ron Stallworth: the first African American in Colorado Springs’ police department, he infiltrates the local Klu Klux Klan to investigate and expose the white supremacist organisation.
A film depicting the true story of African American civil rights defense attorney, Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), and wrongly-accused African American death row prisoner, Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx). Stevenson makes it his mission to free McMillian, convicted for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite the evidence proving his innocence. Watch it on iTunes.
